Preferred Specimen
Collect 1 mL of serum. Allow the serum separator tube (SST) to clot while kept upright for a minimum of 30 minutes. Centrifuge the sample within 2 hours of collection. Store refrigerated.

Alternate Specimen Requirements
Collect 1 mL of serum using a plain red top tube. Let the sample clot upright for at least 60 minutes. After centrifugation, transfer the serum to a plastic transport tube within 2 hours of collection. Clearly label the tube as serum from a plain red top tube. Keep refrigerated.
Alternatively, collect 1 mL of plasma in an EDTA (lavender top) or heparin (green top) tube. Centrifuge and separate the plasma from the cellular components within 2 hours of collection. Transfer the plasma to a plastic transport tube and clearly label it as EDTA or heparin plasma. Refrigerate.
